Mobile Tyre Change

Guide

Can run-flat tyres be repaired?

Usually not. Once a run-flat has been driven on with little or no air in it, most tyre makers say it should be replaced, not repaired.

Why a repair is usually ruled out

A run-flat works by carrying the car on its reinforced sides when the air has gone. Doing that flexes and heats the inside of the tyre. The damage is on the inner structure, where nobody can inspect it properly, so a fitter cannot be sure the tyre is still sound.

When a repair might be possible

Some makers allow one repair if the tyre never ran below a set pressure, the hole is small and it is in the central part of the tread. In practice that means you spotted the warning light and stopped almost at once. If you have driven any real distance on it, expect a replacement.

What to do now

  • Keep under 50 miles an hour and head for somewhere safe to stop
  • Note roughly how far you have driven since the warning came on
  • Read the run-flat marking and the size off the side of the tyre
  • Call us with that information and where the car is
