Mobile Tyre Change

Mobile tyre fitting

New tyres, fitted where the car is parked.

On your drive, in the work car park, outside the house before the school run. Tell us the size, say what you want to spend, and the fitter brings the tyres to the car. One tyre or four.

The tyre machine lives in the back of the van. The old tyre comes off the rim, the new one goes on and is balanced, all at the kerb.

How to read your tyre size

It is printed on the side of every tyre. Read the whole line out to us, not just the first three numbers, and we can quote the right tyre first time.

205/55 R16 91V

205
Width of the tyre, in millimetres
55
Height of the side, as a percentage of the width
R16
Fits a 16 inch wheel
91V
How much weight it carries, and how fast it is rated for

A C after the rim size, as in 215/65 R16C, means a van tyre. Letters like RSC, RFT, ROF or SSR mean a run-flat. Both change what we bring, so say them.

Budget, mid-range or premium

The same size can cost two or three times more in a premium brand, which is most of the reason we do not print prices. All three brackets are legal, new and fitted the same way. The difference is grip in the wet, noise, and how many miles you get.

On a small car doing short trips, a mid-range tyre is usually the sensible answer. On a fast car, a heavy car or one that does motorway miles every day, the premium tyre earns its money in the wet. If you only need to get through to the car's sale next month, say so, and we will quote accordingly.

Tell us what you want to spend. We will say what is available in your size and let you choose.

One tyre, or a pair?

If the tyre on the other side of the same axle has plenty of tread, one is fine. If it is down near 3 mm, a pair is worth considering: the car grips and brakes evenly, and the fitter makes one journey either way, so the second tyre costs less than the first.

We will ask on the call. We will not push a pair on you.

What the price covers

  • The new tyre, in the brand and price bracket you chose
  • A new valve
  • The tyre fitted to the wheel and balanced
  • The wheel put back on and the nuts torqued
  • A look at the pressures on the other tyres
  • The old tyre taken away

Is this dearer than a tyre shop?

Usually, yes, by the cost of bringing the van and the fitter to you. If the car is safe to drive and you have the time, a shop will often be cheaper, and we would rather say so here than have you work it out later. Mobile fitting pays for itself when the car cannot be driven, or when a morning at a garage costs you more than the difference.

Questions people ask about tyre fitting

I don't know my tyre size. Can you still help?

Yes. The size is printed on the side of the tyre: three numbers such as 205/55 R16. The other tyres have it too, if the flat one is hard to read. If you cannot get to it, stay on the line and we will talk you through it, or ask you to send a photo while we are on the phone.

Do you come out in the evening and at weekends?

Yes. About 57 in every 100 of our jobs are booked in the evening or at the weekend, which tells you when tyres tend to fail. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, bank holidays included.

Do you do vans, caravans or motorhomes?

Cars and vans, yes, including twin-wheel tippers. Caravans and motorhomes, no.

How much will it cost?

It depends almost entirely on the tyre. Size, brand and whether it is a run-flat make most of the difference, and the same size can cost two or three times more in a premium brand. We do not publish prices because they would be wrong for your car. Call with your tyre size and you will have a figure in about two minutes, before you agree to anything.

Is mobile fitting dearer than a tyre shop?

Usually, yes, by the cost of bringing the van and the fitter to you. If the car is safe to drive and you have the time, a tyre shop will often be cheaper. We would rather tell you that now than have you find out later. Mobile fitting earns its keep when the car cannot be driven, or when half a day at a garage costs you more than the difference.

Can you fit a spare wheel, or tyres I've already bought?

Yes to both. We have fitted customers' own spare wheels at the roadside and tyres they bought online at home. Tell us on the call so the fitter brings the right tools and does not bring a tyre you do not need.

My locking wheel nut key is missing. Can you still change the tyre?

Usually, yes. If we are changing a tyre, the fitter removes the locking nut as part of the job. Tell us when you book so they bring the removal tool, and we will say before setting off whether we can do yours. We do not come out just to remove locking nuts.

Do you fit budget tyres, or only premium brands?

Both, and the middle too. Tell us what you want to spend and we will say what is available in your size. On a small car doing short trips, a mid-range tyre is usually fine. On a fast or heavy car, a premium tyre earns its money in the wet.
