Mobile Tyre Change

Mobile tyre change

A tyre that can't be driven on, changed where the car stands.

Flat on the drive, in a car park, outside work. We bring the new tyre and the kit to the car, usually within 30 to 45 minutes. The car does not move until it is done.

What the fitter does

About half an hour, start to finish, for one tyre. Here is where it goes.

  1. Jacks the car and takes the wheel off

On level ground, with the car in gear and the handbrake on. If there is a locking nut and no key, this is where the removal tool comes out.

  2. Breaks the old tyre off the rim

With a machine in the van, not a crowbar. The rim is cleaned so the new tyre seals properly.

  3. Fits the new tyre and a new valve

Inflated to the pressure on the sticker inside your door, not to whatever the gauge happens to say.

  4. Balances the wheel

Small weights on the rim so the wheel runs true. Skip this and you feel it through the steering at 60.

  5. Puts the wheel back on and torques the nuts

Tightened to the figure the car maker specifies, with a torque wrench, in a star pattern.

  6. Takes the old tyre away

You are not left with it leaning against the garage wall.

Already have a spare, or a tyre you bought?

We will fit it. A spare wheel put on at the roadside, a space-saver swapped back for a proper tyre, or tyres you ordered online and need fitting at home. Tell us on the call so the fitter brings the right tools, and does not bring a tyre you do not need.

Change it, or repair it?

If the tyre went down slowly and the cause is a nail in the middle of the tread, it may not need changing at all. A repair costs less and the fitter checks before deciding.

If the side of the tyre is damaged, it has been driven on flat, or it has simply worn out, it needs changing, and this is the page for that.

Changed where they stood, lately

Real jobs from our own records, with nothing that identifies the customer.

Stuck on the drive: standard tyre or run-flat

    BMW 4 Series · 255/35 R19

The car was at home on the owner's drive with a tyre that could not be driven on. We explained the choice between a standard tyre and a run-flat in that size, the owner chose the standard tyre, and it was fitted at the house.

    Needed before four o'clock

    Range Rover Sport · 235/60 R18

The owner was at home and needed the tyre done before 4pm. We booked the fitter for 3pm so the car was ready in time.

A spare wheel at eleven at night

A driver in a Bath car park had a flat tyre and a spare wheel in the boot. He called late on a Thursday night, and we booked a fitter to put the spare on so he could get home.

Questions people ask before they book

How quickly can you get to me?

Usually 30 to 45 minutes from the call, anywhere in the six counties we cover. If it will be longer, because of where you are or the time of night, you hear that on the call, not after you have booked.

I don't know my tyre size. Can you still help?

Yes. The size is printed on the side of the tyre: three numbers such as 205/55 R16. The other tyres have it too, if the flat one is hard to read. If you cannot get to it, stay on the line and we will talk you through it, or ask you to send a photo while we are on the phone.

How much will it cost?

It depends almost entirely on the tyre. Size, brand and whether it is a run-flat make most of the difference, and the same size can cost two or three times more in a premium brand. We do not publish prices because they would be wrong for your car. Call with your tyre size and you will have a figure in about two minutes, before you agree to anything.

Can you repair the puncture instead of replacing the tyre?

Often. If the hole is in the middle three-quarters of the tread, under about 6 mm across, and the tyre has not been driven on flat, it can usually be repaired. The fitter checks before deciding. A repair costs less than a tyre, so there is no reason for us to push a new one.

Can you fit a spare wheel, or tyres I've already bought?

Yes to both. We have fitted customers' own spare wheels at the roadside and tyres they bought online at home. Tell us on the call so the fitter brings the right tools and does not bring a tyre you do not need.

My locking wheel nut key is missing. Can you still change the tyre?

Usually, yes. If we are changing a tyre, the fitter removes the locking nut as part of the job. Tell us when you book so they bring the removal tool, and we will say before setting off whether we can do yours. We do not come out just to remove locking nuts.
